The finished work by Nigel Ryan

Edition X

The complete presentation I imagined for the work.

For the photographs I have selected for Edition X, every choice, from the paper to the frame, is part of the finished piece. A small edition, developed with my framers and ready to hang and enjoy.

Introducing Edition X

A film by Nigel Ryan, approximately 6 minutes

In the film I show Slowing Darkness and explain the float mounting, gallery glass and shared edition limit. Current sizes and any earlier edition limits are listed on each artwork’s page.

So I recently added a new concept to my website. It's called Edition X. And what it is, is I've teamed up with a local framing company and we sat down. They looked at my work and we looked at all of the different combinations of frames and backboards and so on. And I wanted to try and find the right combination for my work that would really show it off well.

And because this company is experts in framing and they're doing lots of high-end framing, I took a bit of a steer from them on the finish. But it was a collaboration. So we came up with the idea together. So this is Edition X. This is what they look like. It's an oak frame.

And you have slightly off-white mount boards in the back. You have the fine art print. So it's a print which is actually mounted and it's floated. So it's separate from the mount board and it's like floating. So it's slightly three-dimensional. We have white fillets on the inside. And the purpose of the fillet is to push the glass away from the print so the glass doesn't touch the print because even though it's a fine art print, we want it to be archival.

And what will happen is if the glass is touching, then over a period of time, the print may stick to the glass. And then you've kind of lost your print at the end of it. So the idea is to keep the glass away. The glass itself is UV70 gallery glass. So that is offering 70% UV protection, but it's also supposed to reduce 90% of reflections on the images as well.

So it makes it clearer to look at. Even though it's got UV70, I still wouldn't hang this in direct sunlight because I think even though you've got the 70% protection, you've got the print as well, both of which are supposed to be guaranteed to last, I think it would still fade if you put it in direct sunlight, in powerful sunlight.

So Edition X is an edition of ten and it's ten per image and not all images because I haven't done all images. So it's just the ones that I've chosen to do at any given point. So this image here called Slowing Darkness, this one is actually available in A1, which is this size here, which is a nice size for the wall, and A0, which is double the size of this one.

So it's quite domineering. It's a big, big-sized piece of art. But across those two sizes, there will only be a total of ten. So it's not going to be ten of this and ten of that. It's just ten. So once ten have been manufactured, then that's it for that image. They won't be made again.

So they're going to be rare. But this is how I would like the images to be presented. And I think they look really great. I've had really good feedback from people that have seen them and people have bought them. And actually the one that really seems to capture people's imagination is the A0.

And the A0, which is absolutely enormous, it just looks great when it's in this combination. And they are so large that they're just very powerful. It dominates a wall. You can't ignore it. You can see all of the detail. It really highlights the quality of the work, I would say.

And so the A0 seems to be the one that people really like, that size. And I think it's probably too big for most people, but I don't know, they've been selling. So I guess people do find a space for it. So yeah, I just wanted to introduce Edition X as I've added it to the website recently.

I have one more thing, actually. The first edition, so like this one is the first of Slowing Darkness in Edition X, so this one will be signed on the back. And all of them actually come with a certificate of authenticity, of course, because they are limited special editions. But the first edition will be signed.

Normally the first edition will have been made for me for some reason. So either be made as a sample so I could see, or made for a show or a showcase, or museum or something like that. But the first one will generally be made for me, so I'll have it in my hands and I can sign that. But actually all of them will come through me because I will always check them before they go out the door anyway.

But the first edition will be hand-signed, but all of them will come with a certificate of authenticity. And so that's it. Yeah. Edition X, ready to hang. Hope you like it. Let me know. Do you like the style? And yeah, enjoy.

The pleasure of a finished piece

One of my most satisfying sales began with making the photograph and ended with delivering it myself. I printed the image on my fine art printer, chose the frame, mounted the work and took it to its new owner.

Watching their expression as they unboxed the finished piece was deeply moving. I would love to complete that whole journey every time. It isn’t always practical, but that experience helped shape Edition X: work presented with full attention to the details that matter.

Developed together

I took a framing course at City Lit to understand the materials, terminology and finishes, and to learn to frame my own work. Having framed pieces myself, I chose to work with Project Framing so I could bring that understanding to our decisions while keeping my focus on making photographs.

We sat together, placing different frame samples against my prints and exploring the mounting board, float, proportions and frame colour. We looked beyond the usual black or white to find a presentation that complements the photographs. Every component was chosen as part of the whole.

Paper, board, frame and glass

Every element has a purpose

A closer look at the framing

The paper

I compared samples on many different papers. For Edition X, I chose Origin Lustre Pro 270gsm because its lustre finish showed the work best behind the gallery glass. My print-only editions use Hahnemühle Pearl, chosen for its flexibility across a wide range of frames.

The frame

Maiella Oak Flat is an FSC-certified oak-veneer moulding. I chose its finish for consistency and because I wanted a frame that would wear well in everyday life. Responsible sourcing and a presentation that would keep looking good were part of the brief.

The float and board

The print floats above a slightly off-white backing board, giving the presentation depth. White spacers keep the glass away from the surface of the print. The board, spacing and proportions were all considered with my framers.

The gallery glass

Anti-reflective UV70 gallery glass helps you see the photograph clearly and offers 70% UV protection. The choice of glass and paper was considered together. Even with protective glazing, artwork should be kept out of direct sunlight.

From the framers to you

Once a piece is made, I collect and inspect it before it is sent to its collector. Every piece comes with a signed certificate of authenticity. Number 1 in each edition is also signed on the rear.

Edition X is limited to ten numbered pieces per selected photograph, across all available sizes. That is ten in total, rather than ten of each size. Three earlier editions retain their original limit of five: Is Parliament Behind The People?, The Affair, Reversed and Two Suns in Silves.

My photographs have been described as beautiful, emotional and dramatic. Edition X is the presentation I chose to give those qualities room to be experienced.
